Udawalawa Power Station

The Udawalawe Dam, located in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, is a large irrigation structure that also contributes to hydroelectric power generation. The dam, comprising both embankment and gravity sections, has a total length of approximately 3.9 kilometers (2.4 miles). Its primary purpose is to facilitate irrigation, but it also generates hydroelectric power with two 2 MW units that were commissioned in April 1969.
Water levels in the Udawalawe Reservoir, created by the dam, are regulated by a series of spillways. Five tainter gate spillways are located at the eastern end of the dam, and two additional spillways are situated closer to the center. The reservoir spans approximately 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) in length and has a maximum width of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles).
The dam plays a vital role in water management for agriculture in the surrounding region, ensuring a reliable water supply for irrigation purposes. In addition to its agricultural benefits, the hydroelectric power generated by the dam contributes to the local energy supply, although the output is relatively small at 4 MW. Its dual functionality as an irrigation and power generation structure makes the Udawalawe Dam a significant asset for both the local economy and the environment.
