Samanala complex is the administrative office of the five major hydropower stations in CEB. Samanala complex administrates Samanalawewa, Kukuleganga, Umaoiya, Udawalawa and Ingeniyagala hydropower stations. The Deputy general manager Samanala Complex is holding the responsibility of asset ownership of Samanala Complex hydropower stations.
Samanala Complex power stations are contributing to an average of 14% of annual Sri Lankan electricity demand by dispatching an average of 841 GWh of energy to the nation. Samanala complex provides clean renewable energy to the nation.
The total employee capacity of the Samanala complex in 2024 January is 380 persons. This team consist of 18 nos. of engineers, one accountant a human resource officer, 203 nos. of skilled grade technical personnel and 150 nos. of other skilled trade employees. The teamwork of these dedicated, self-motivated, friendly professionals is the key factor for the success of this prestigious hydropower complex.
Samanala complex has successfully achieved its primary objective of providing green energy while optimizing water usage in the last 25 years. Samanalaweaw and Udawalawa power stations released water to 915, 48,562 hectares of cultivated lands while Ingeniyagala and Umoiya released water to 48,000 and 20,000 hectares respectively. On the other hand, the Kukuleganga power station which is operated as a run-of-the-river type, is contributing to a tremendous amount of electricity generation while mitigating the floods in the lower basin of Kukuleganga river.
The office of the Deputy general manager (Samanala Complex) is providing, administration, strategic planning, performance monitoring and engineering services, financing and human resource management to the Samanala Complex power stations. There are 31 nos. of dedicated professionals working at the office providing the essential services to the stakeholders to operate their core business.
At present, Eng. USH Ambepitya, an Electrical Engineer with 34 years of experience, holds the office of the deputy general manager (Samanala Complex) and manages the technical, financial, operational and human resources development perspectives of the Samanala complex.
Samanala complex is dedicated to serving the Ceylon Electricity Board by providing efficient involvement in its professional capacity to safeguard the vision and mission of the Ceylon Electricity Board while enhancing the corporate values of the CEB.

- Harnessing the Power of Water
- Generating energy from the power of water represents large amount of clean, renewable energy. 71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. The worlds hydro power potential amounts to 20 billion Mega Watt hours per year and only 30 percent of this has been developed so far.
- Hydro power is not only environmentally friendly, but also cost-effective. Hydro power plants have the highest operating efficiency of all known generation systems. They are largely automated, and their operating costs are relatively low.
- Hydro Power plants also play an important role in water resource management, flood control, navigation, irrigation and in creating recreation areas.
